On The Doorstep Of Your Chalet Val D Isere At Christmas

By Earl Knudsen

If you are looking for Christmas ski slope fun that will have you rushing to get out of your chalet, Val dIsere is the place to be for the winter season. Full of snow, twinkly lights and of course, Santa, Val dIsere hosts a variety of Christmas entertainment for you and your family.

Critrium de la premire neige

Yes, its cold, but dont stay stuck in your chalet, Val dIsere is host to one of the events of the downhill ski season! Now in its 55th year, the Critrium de la Premire Neige has been steadily growing since its beginnings in 1955. Now it represents the perfect way to start your winter season and have some great snow-filled fun.

55 years ago, the sports club committee at the fledgling ski resort, Val dIsere, decided to create a competition and entice the skiers, who were training for their season, to use it as a pre-competition race. It worked, and many French skiers came and competed in the early days. In the 1960s, the French became leaders in the world of downhill skiing, and other countries began to adopt their training methods and incorporate them into their own rgimes. This included travelling to Val dIsere in December for the Critrium de la Premire Neige. Now it is seen as the pre-cursor to the World Cup!

This year the events will take place on the 10th, 11th and 12th December for the men and on the 17th, 18th and 19th December for the women. So, its time to book your flights and chalet, Val dIsere and the Criterium de la Premere Neige are awaiting you!

Christmas Market and Santa Claus

It is tempting, when you are not skiing, to simply stay inside and snuggle up in front of a roaring fire, but you really should try to get out of your chalet. Val dIsere has a great Christmas market, so if you are looking for some off-slope entertainment, then look no further. Santa Claus, himself, likes to spend time walking up and down the mish mash of stalls with various seasonal treats and delights. While your children are explaining their detailed Christmas wish list to Kris Kringle, you can grab some delicious roasted chestnuts and enjoy a warm glass of fresh gluhwein (mulled wine).

Ice Sculptures and Fireworks

Looking for exciting entertainment on the doorstep of your chalet? Val dIsere hosts a Christmas wonderland of activities every Thursday night. You will be treated to parades, music and a great party atmosphere. You will be awed by the great firework displays and street entertainment, but dont just watch! Get involved in the creation of the beautiful ice and snow sculptures that line the streets. The whole family will enjoy this entertainment and it will definitely give you the Christmas fever.

Horse or Husky?

If you want to see the area, but are not a fan of walking, take a husky ride and see the sights in a truly unforgettable experience. This is not for the faint-hearted, however, so if you fancy something a little more sedate and quiet, then snuggle under a warm blanket, while taking a horse sleigh ride around Val dIsere. It is a beautiful way to see the scenery and either of these activities is definitely worth braving the cold outside and leaving your chalet. Val dIsere is a winter wonderland, and there is no doubt with all the brilliant things to do, it will make a Christmas that you will remember forever.
